FIRE EXTINGUISHER CLASSIFICATIONS WITH EXTINGUISHER EXAMPLES OFFERED:

Class A Extinguishers offer fire protection for ordinary combustibles, such as paper, wood and textiles. These liquid units provide a soaking, quenching effect for multi-level deep seated fires. Nothing is better at providing this type of fire extinguishment than liquid type units. Class A only extinguishers are available in 2.5 gallon sizes.

Class B Extinguishers should be used on fires involving flammable liquids, such as grease, gasoline, oil, etc. Extinguisher example for Class B fires include: Dry Chemical, Foam, CO2, and various other Clean Agent Extinguishers, such as Halon 1211, Halotron I, and FE-36.

Class C Extinguishers are suitable for use on Energized Electrical Fires. These extinguishers do not have a numerical rating. The presence of the letter “C” indicates that the extinguishing agent is Non-Conductive and can be used for an Energized Electrical Fires. Examples: Dry chemical, CO2, all other clean agent types.

Class D Extinguishers are designed for use on Burning Metals, such as Magnesium, and Titanium. They contain a Class D Dry Powder. These burning metals can burn at 2500° F, and are Most Difficult to Extinguish. Burning lithium fires require a special "Copper" type Dry Powder which is different than the normal Class D dry powders. Class D extinguishers come in 30lb. sizes. In addition to Class D extinguishers, pails of Class D powder can be used with a scoop to extinguish these types of fires by the operator.

Class K fires involve Hot Animal Fat/Grease & Vegetable Oils for Kitchen/Cooking Operations. These can include Restaurants, Schools and Places of Worship. This new Class "K" Classification Standard came into effect in 1998, offering a much better method of extinguishing Hot Grease and Oil Fires related to Commercial Cooking Operations and is now Mandatory. These Class K extinguishers Do Not Allow for Fire Re-flash as dry chemical units do and form a Vapor Barrier on the hot grease or oil. These extinguishers are available in 6 liter and 2.5 gallon sizes.
